Many species of scleractinian reef corals deposit aragonite skeletons with cyclic bands of higher and lower density whose periodicity is annual. As these growth bands are frequently preserved in fossil corals, attention has been focused on their possible use as environmental indicators in as much as density variations may reflect changes in water temperature and/or light intensity. Relationships between skeletal growth banding and environmental parameters have been investigated by X-radiographic examination of 1488 specimens of modern reef corals representing 31 reef localities widely distributed over the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean regions. Average monthly seawater temperature and solar radiation data are available for each locality, and the date of collection is known for each sample. Of the 47 genera and subgenera included in the study, density variations were most pronounced in skeletons of Astreopora, Coscinarea, Cyphastrea, Favia (especially species with small corallites such as F. stelligera), Goniastrea, Hydnophora (massive forms only, e.g. M. microconos), Leptoria, Montastrea (especially M. annularis, with small corallites), Pavona, Polyastra, and Plesiastrea. Less useful are Diploastrea, Diploria, and Favites (which tend to have large corallite diameters), and Goniopora, Alveopora, Porites, Siderastrea, and Stephanaria (which frequently exhibit numerous secondary density variations within the annual cycle). Despite considerable variability among different individual corals from the same population, the average thickness of the skeletal growth bands is positively correlated with mean annual water temperature. By comparing characteristics of the outermost growth increment and the date of collection with monthly records of water temperature and solar radiation, it appears that maximum skeletal density is associated with those periods of the year when seawater temperature is above average.

Clonidine (1·3 μg/kg) was administered to 62 control and 55 depressed patients free of psychoactive drugs for at least 7 days and fasted overnight. Growth hormone (GH), pulse, blood pressure and sedation were measured every 15 min for 1 h before and 2 h after clonidine infusion.
GH response did not differ significantly between control and depressed subjects overall or when divided by sex. The systolic hypotensive and sedative responses were blunted in depressed subjects compared with controls; these effects appeared to be secondary to residual antidepressant drugs since the differences were only significant for those depressed subjects with short drug-free intervals.
No differences between depressed subjects and controls were seen in diastolic hypotensive or bradycardic responses and no differences in GH, cardiovascular or sedative responses were found between endogenous and non-endogenous depressed subjects.

3H-imipramine binding in 39 drug-free patients with major depression and 44 healthy controls did not differ significantly between the two groups, in male or female subjects or in subgroups of depressed patients divided by endogenicity or dexamethasone suppression test result. 3H-imipramine binding in depressed patients drug-free for less than three weeks did not differ from those drug-free for longer intervals or from controls. A significant seasonal variation of 3H-imipramine Bmax was found, with lower values in summer and autumn. Treatment of depressed patients with imipramine or lofepramine for six weeks increased KD and Bmax. Methodological modification (in preparation and storage of platelets) does not explain the major differences in results between this study (using frozen platelets), a previous one (using freshly prepared platelets) and others in general, although it might contribute to the range of values reported.

The biocompatibility, osteoconduction and biodegradation characteristics of calcium phosphate ceramics is controversial. Few comparative studies have controlled for material properties as well as biological influences. In this study, we compared the in-vivo response of implants made porous (500 μm pores) using the Replamineforu™ process and composed of hydroxyapatite (HA), sintered hydroxyapatite (SHA), tricalcium phosphate (TCP) or calcium carbonate (CC). In ten rabbits, rod-shaped implants (5mm d × 10m 1) of each material were randomly press-fit into two bilateral defects of either the bicortical iliac crest or unicortical proximal tibial metaphysis. Explants were harvested at 1 to 9 months, sectioned midsagitally with half embedded in plastic for qualitative histomorphometry, and the other half decalcified and stained for histology. The acute and chronic inflammatory response was minimal for all implants. The osteoconduction properties were similar for the calcium phosphate materials, resulting in repair of the cortical defects within three months with partial bony fill of the medullary canal. CC completely degraded by three months, causing incomplete defect closure in some cases. TCP partially degraded in the medullary canal, but remained when surrounded by bone in the cortex. HA and SHA did not degrade. In summary:

New Instruments for X-ray or neutron diffraction or for analyses by X-ray spectrographic methods are described. They incorporate a variety of new features which open a broad new scope of experimental techniques to the investigator. The diffractometer can be used with the diffraction plane either horizontal or vertical. The X-ray tube is conveniently supported by the diffractometer, allowing one to adjust the take-off angle from 0 to 10° without disturbing the precise alignment of the instrument. The 2θ angle bisecting mechanism functions throughout a 360° range and allows independent rotation (ω) of the specimen about the common axis. It is designed specifically for fully automatic remotely programed operation in addition to the usual manual modes.
The constant-potential generator is rated up to 50 ma at 50 kvcp and up to 40 ma at 60 kvcp, A monitor-type switch selects combinations of kilovolts and milliamperes in a manner such that exact reproducibility of settings is assured.
The dual-function strip-chart recorder incorporates both linear and three-cycle logarithmic slide wires so that each uses the output from the same linear rate meter.
The Integrated Radiation Analyzer consists of a pulse-height analyzer, electronic timer, high-speed sealer, precision linear ratemeter, power supply, printer, and diffractometer control. Integration of these components has made possible unique programing for X-ray analysis.

The wavelength of the characteristic X-radiation for the lighter elements is not constant but is a function of valence state and to a much lesser extent is a function of co-ordination number.
Commercially available X-ray fluorescence equipment is used in detecting shifts in the characteristic radiation for aluminum, sulfur, chlorine, titanium, vanadium and iron. The greatest shift is found in the case of chlorine where, using the NaCl analyzer, a shift of nearly 0.2° 2 θ is obtained in going from the Cl− in cholorides to the Cl+7 in the perchloratc. The wavelength of the Al+3Kα varies slightly as a function of co-ordination number.
Examples are given for using these phenomena in studying minerals and other compounds. The feasibility of extending the study to both heavier and lighter elements is explored.
